A STEP Toward the Future: From High School to Electrical Careers
Long Beach high school seniors have a new opportunity to begin electrical training before graduation through the Seniors to Electrical Program (STEP).
LAETI is partnering with IBEW Local 11, NECA, the Port of Long Beach, and Long Beach schools to create a direct pathway toward a union electrical career.
The initial class is expected to include approximately 25 seniors from three Long Beach high schools. Students will attend high school during the day and complete the first-year electrical apprenticeship curriculum after school. Those who successfully complete the program, meet its requirements, and graduate will have a direct-entry pathway into IBEW Local 11’s apprenticeship program.
Opportunity Built on Commitment
Developed by John Harriel Jr., IBEW Local 11 Executive Board Member, STEP reflects his commitment to helping young people discover the trades. Students will be expected to attend consistently, arrive on time, complete their work, and meet program standards.
Harriel hopes this first class will help inspire future generations and become a model for other communities—one STEP at a time.
